Surgical Spirit (or alcohol)
Varnish
Felt
Gluegun

White paint

Step 1. Pick the colours you want for your coaster. For this tutorial I have chosen pinks, yellows and oranges for a summery look. Then begin to colour in the tile, making sure you cover the whole of the top surface.

Step 2.  Very lightly dab the surgical spirit or alcohol onto the pen marks. It helps to use something to dip into the bottle and then onto the tile as it is easier to control (I used the end of a wooden skewer). Leave it to dry - you may have to leave it overnight to dry completely.

Step 4. Once the tile is completely dry, cover with a layer of varnish. This will ensure the colours don't smudge when the coasters are being used. Then, paint the edges of the tile white, or another colour that works with your colour scheme. Finally cut a piece of felt just smaller than the size of the tile, and use the glue gun to attach it to the underneath. This will make sure no tables are scratched when they're being used!
